The Human Condition (1959-61)- Masaki Kobayashi
Why? The Human Condition would easily be my favorite foreign film. It might even be even my favorite film, however, its a technically three films, and as such, it fits into another category. This is the most engrossing ten hours I’ve spent in front of the television. Kaji is a humanist marxist pacifist in fascist WWII Japan. Essentially, it follows a man who must constantly live as a contradiction to himself. In every way The Human Condition lives up to its name. I could dote on it more, but I’d prefer to let you watch it for yourself.
