As I Lay Dying
Why? Jewel Bundren doesn’t seem like he is willing to do anything for anyone—at least that’s the impression he makes with his words. At the climax of the novel, Darl Bundren has grown tired of sacrificing his family for his dead mother’s wish, and so, in the middle of the night he secretly sets fire to a barn in which his mother’s coffin lays. Soon after, the Bundren family runs outside to see the barn aflame. In an instant, Jewl leaps into the ring of fire, scrambles to free the screaming horses an mules, and then runs to find his mother’s coffin as the flames crowd around him. As he grabs the coffin, he finds his path is blocked by the growing hell of the barn. Has Jewl sacrificed too much? Will he make it out alive? Will his mother’s dying wish be carried out? Read and find out for yourself.
