Asterios Polyp (2009)- David Mazzucchelli
Verdict: Read it!
Imagine a massive 344 page comic book (graphic novel if you like to be snooty) loosely based on The Odyssey that deals with the meaning and apparent dualities of life and death, love and reason, morality and absurdity—all done while following a divorced, homeless, ex-professor/architect named Asterios Polyp. Does that sound horribly obnoxious? It easily could be, but in this case it isn’t. Consider Asterios Polyp to be one of those great works that screams—a comic book can be as spellbinding, sophisticated, and emotionally resonant as any other medium. Read it and see why.
